Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's Real Danger: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a misguided assessment of the European Union. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" agendas pose an existential threat to European civilization. However, this argument is based on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The actual challenge facing Europe is not societal but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Economic Divide Between Europe and the US

The data paint a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, while a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. During this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Today, about 50% of the global 50 largest tech companies are American, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Question

This widening disparity is driven by stronger productivity growth in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of global tech leadership is decidedly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This disparity raises a pressing issue: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, what is Europe stand? Experts widely concede it is essentially a two-horse race involving the US and China, with European nations entering at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several key reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic system for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a true unified investment market, a factor that caps the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under a single regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population, is split among 27 separate systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was historically met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, one can find reasons for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to advance substantial change. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of sweeping changes.

With the right policies and rule changes, these assets could support far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses significant advantages: high-quality workforce, excellent education systems, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically increase productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, if it fails to take bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
