The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The ex-president was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than over two decades in prison, but he was staying under house arrest pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information came to light.

This included trying to remove his tracking device and a summons to a demonstration that could enable a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the detention, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on digital networks on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or see it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could offer prayers for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the possibility of his transfer to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a background of planning to request asylum through a consular facility", a declaration said.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with tracking devices.

They also requested that the former president be permitted to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he needed ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

Background on Conviction

The former president was convicted of heading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the presidential race to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he knew of a scheme which encompassed plans to kill the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The plot was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the support of the military leaders. His successor was took office without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised official structures in the national capital, Brasília.

The security forces took action and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from campaigning for office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him competing in the next presidential race.
