At least 13 people perish and ninety-eight injured in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship government projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” declared the country's president.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the year before. This project was closely associated with his government's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were built at an accelerated speed, defying forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled persistent apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party called for an urgent halt in the development and management of all similar projects.

This pause was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the situation "demands prompt explanations."

In response, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital undertakings.
